Its nice to learn a bit of history about the area and stand where Romans did once upon a time.

Easy to get to, with car parking off Waterworks Road, well signposted. Not really suitable for prams, wheelchair etc. as access is over a field. Not a big climb but wear sensible footwear depending on the weather.Although there isn't too much to see, you get a good impression of what a defensible fort it was. The ramparts are still visible as are the ditches. You can even see where the bread was baked!Interesting story boards give an idea of what the fort would have looked like when fully manned. The remains of the military road are faint although more distinct traces can be found over Standedge, couple of miles away on A62 heading towards Huddersfield. This was the main road to Manchester ( Mamcumium) and probably why the site was chosen for defensive purposes as well as keeping the native Brigantes in check. The original walls were built of stone and turf and would have been higher than they are now. It's worth a visit to see the fort and get a feel for how it must have been.

Great to see an archaeological dig on my visit

Well preserved earthworks with helpful information boards. Access is not easy and it involves driving around some fairly narrow lanes with few places to mark thereafter. Nevertheless, the site is worth it, and the scenery will impress any visitors who arent enamoured by the history.

Well worth a visit. I have been so honored to excavate on the site.
